Not that I consider myself much of a seamstress, but I have a decent cheapie iron (a Black & Decker Quick & Easy 300), and I always use water from the Brita filter in it with good results. I inherited mine from my boyfriend, and I have no idea if it has any self-cleaning features or anything though.
