SCA Survey
Aug. 4th, 2010 10:43 amSo, like a good little Lemming, I finished the survey.
Though, did anybody else get the feeling that it was written in a manner that suggests someone has an axe to grind? F'rinstance - if you marked that you were against a Peerage for the Non-Heavy martial arts, that was the end of that - no additional commentary solicited.
It just gave the distinct impression that someone had sifted all the E-mail lists on the NA continent (because I note that favorite topics from other countries were not addressed) for the most violent flame war discussions - and then wrote a survey regarding them.
......
Why?
I mentioned some of this in a comment to
nibuca.
A lot of the elements covered by the survey are things that can't be altered by BOD decree, in any serious way. Make things more authentic? Good luck with that, 40+ years into the existence of the SCA. The time to set an authenticity mission is long past. Ditto for making things "less" authentic. How? You won't stop the people who are authenticity mavens from snarking the earth pimples or panne velvet garb. This sort of thing is the equivalent of trying to herd a Mastodon. With a kazoo.
As to the rest - you're starting to hit on some of the really deeply divided topics. Why bring them ALL up at once? Issuing this survey implies that something is going to be done about it. Both sides of very debate covered will proceed to gird for battle. And those that want the changes will be disappointed if nothing happens.
So, I'm just confused. This is a lot of work for just "taking the temperature" of the SCA as a whole. And I wish they had stated their intentions - what DO they intend to do with this information? Make a case to the BoD that the "SCA" wants changes A, B, and C? What if they don't? A negative opinion will never put the issues to rest. They just come up again and again....
*wondering*
