Talk, talk, talk....

I've been beating the bushes (again. Still. whatever.) with my large RUM site Beating Stick'O'Doom. And I got one comment back from a Barony that used to regularly host Crown and Coronations. It was to the effect that rising prices had deprived them of all their sites that are capable of holding a Kingdom event.

Never one to go down to defeat easily, I responded with some suggestions to contact a nearby Shire (whom I think had a site, but not the resources), speak with another Canton that is forming in a new area of the Barony - who might know of new sites, etc., and pointing out that RUM is likely to have an attendance of 200-400.

Which got me thinking about a couple of things.

First - the (horribly outdated) piece on the Kingdom website on bidding for Crown and Coronation anticipates an attendance of 700-800, occasionally as many as 1000. Gotta say - I don't think I've ever been to one that big. 300-400, maybe. Is my perception off? Has it dropped off? Or does it vary widely by event?

Second - some of the larger events that aren't formally "Kingdom" events top even 1000. Past a point, they become victims of their own success. Val Day has gotten insane, with no daycamps and no day boards allowed. No food sitting out, or common vessels, etc. One has to wonder... what do you do in these situations? Do you let the intense crowding and increased strictures turn the attendance into a self-limiting feature, keeping away those who don't want to tolerate it? Do you intentionally drop activities in order to focus on the main aspect (in this case, the opening of the melee season) in the interest of dropping attendance to manageable numbers? A larger site isn't really likely.

Third - this is something that IS a problem everywhere. It's just worse in some places than others. There are still reasonable sites out here. But a school now can cost $2500 for one day. Plus custodial fees.

This makes RUM really hard to find a site for. The need for classroom means larger sites, but the draw is about 1/2 of a Crown or Coronation.

Of course, my bwain being my bwain, another thought also floated through:

This is another reason why Principality formation isn't such a bad notion. It's entirely possible that Coronet events will be much easier to host and much more enjoyable for everybody involved because the scope is smaller.

Just sayin'.
