But, that said, my mother stayed home with us when we were kids - and had the most impressive garden. So I didn't know that peas came in cans until Jr. High. I has standards. ;-) And, Mom is still big into her garden. So health food shopping for me means a trip home with a cooler. Dad even offered to pick me some raspberries next year, as I never quite get time.
I forget how deluged my area is with fresh produce by the bushel. And I have a 20 cu ft chest deep freeze. Soooo.....
With all the rave reviews, I just expected more. Heck, I expected more from Whole Foods. Since they take the chefs there to shop on Top Chef and all. But, honestly, not so impressed. Fresh Market regularly had a much better produce selection. The meat counter was OK - but I've got a 1/4 steer in the freezer from my cousin and a couple chickens yet raised by my technicians. The seafood case was impressive - I'm just not that fond of seafood. And lets face it, if you can't smell the ocean, you probably shouldn't be eating lobster. Or sushi. ;-)
Admittedly, it is both expensive and time consuming to try to get away from processed foods and "eat local." (I'm also a vet, and some of the local dairies send me screaming - so there are brands of milk I won't buy).
My personal take - I'm not so interested in "organic" or "cage free" or whatever the latest buzzword is. I'm more inclined to try to avoid processed foods when I can. It's more a journey than a destination at the moment.
