Brain Debris....

So, what's running through my head this morning (in between all the crazy people - oi!)

1. Possible new project (or rather, an adjunct to current costuming stuff and website) - Visual dictionary of Dutch costuming terms. As I finish things, take a picture and post it with the Dutch word for it.

2. I really need to get back to work on the bequests - now that I have a laptop and can sit and do them in comfort.

3. What does anybody know about the little bunch in the SCA who refers to themselves as "Group W Bench."? I have some opinions of my own, based on what I know about at least one of them. Curious to what else others are aware of.

4. Costuming podcast?

5. SCA truism #496 - The squeaky wheel gets the grease. There are umpteen "local" fighter practices organized based on the convenience of the whiniest members. "Issues" keep getting raised that are the grinding axe of a few vocal folks, in spite of repeated demonstration that the majority disagrees. One person can shout down a good idea just because they're so obnoxious, no one will stare them down. Tired of this. Expect battle armour to be donned, shortly.

3.

Not a clue, but it seems weird to call oneself as "Group W Bench"
Are they saying they are bad to the bone or that the society wrongfully accused them as being bad to the bone...

I certainly would not pick that name for myself anyway... got some weird folk out there! even for the SCA :P

And that's it. They seem to be a group of folks sort of outside even the odd degree of normal for the SCA. And proud of it. And determined to promote it.

I think the "Group W Bench" is just a joke.

You do know "Alice's Restaurant" yes? "Group W is where they put ya if you may not be moral enough to join the army..."

Yeah, and maybe...

But I'm getting more of a vibe that it's a loosely affiliated group of people who are.... shall we say "Outside the Norm" even by SCA standards. With an apparent goal of championing the causes of some of the Society's favorite flame war topics. Toward what end, I don't know. They have the start of their own Wiki page.

Call it a vibe. Not really a positive one.

well... I'm looking at this wiki page now... http://www.group-w-bench.org/index.php/Main_Page

if this is them, I don't see the championing of causes that cause flame wars but perhaps I have not explored deep enough. Can't really see Robin doing that either, but then I only have had professional interactions so my knowledge is quite limited.

On the other hand, the "group W bench" is a rather poor choice, or at least distasteful, of a name to pick considering it's where the "father rapers" went and all that...

I may not have phrased that quite right - Let's say - I think they have a specific agenda. And I think it's possible that a fair number of them are sort of "embracing" the aspects of their lifestyles that others don't approve of with that name. Sort of throwing down the gauntlet.

As to the other - Professional professional? Or SCA official sort of interactions? He has something of a reputation in certain quarters that I wouldn't exactly characterize as positive in nature.

doh, my bad phrasing there... official SCA crap, though we had exchanged some talk aside from that, but not so much beyond that

Ah. John points out that, aside from the song, that slang would also refer to those who admitted to homosexuality on the draft line. So, possibly more just a more forceful group.

though because the Guthrie reference was towards something rather negative, I'd imagine that slang wouldn't exactly be fitting for an SCA group

interesting though, I wasn't aware of the other reference
