I don't like the invisible fence, teach your pet the boundries. Mine know that on our 5 acres there's no leash, once we get to the edge my dog sits and waits for me to leash him.
I have a retractable leash, and it's ok... but it's not for every day. What do you hate about them?
Doggie purse? As in the little dogs? Those things need to learn they have feet and can walk for themselves!!
50% of the problem with invisible fences is the dog and its boundaries. The other 50% is that other animals can cross over into your dog's territory. They provide nothing but a false sense of being in charge. And cause hot spots because of the idiots who leave the electrode collars on ALL THE TIME.
Retractable leashes = bad physics. There is a reason most city ordinances used to specify a 6 ft. restraining leash - not 25. You don't have any sort of control over 6 ft. And most people pay no attention to their dog - after all, he's on a leash. Even if he's peeing on someone's foot or trying to eat the cat next door or whatever. Again, false sense of a control that does not exist. Even if your dog isn't the aggressor - if it's out 15 feet on a little piece of nylon cord and GETS attacked.... can you use the leash to get it out of reach of the other dog? No.
The other problem - your dog knows the difference. And doesn't respect the retractable leash the way he would a short, firm leash with a consistent tension. Especially if you've got a buckle-on collar. 90% of which are on WAY too loose.
Gotcha. I do have other dogs on the drive who can be aggressive, which is why I take my leash with me, so I can grab my dog if they come over. He ignores them barking so as long as they stay on their property it's not an issue (at least it hasn't been) I also use a harness because my sheltie has a smaller head than neck and slips it too easily. I also don't like when dogs pull and choke themselves on the collar, just bothers me.
I never understood the invisible fence, and I can see that other animals would be a problem. That's a really good point.
