"I've never been asked that before."

Otherwise known as the phrase I most commonly hear when shopping.
I will freely admit that I have odd hobbies. And even my normal hobbies, I go about is some fairly strange ways. But today my husband managed to get WAY too much entertainment out of it.
Keep in mind that I'm coming off several aggravating days trying to obtain supplies for various projects. First, there was the ill-advised foray to JoAnns to look for cotton organdy. Now, historical costuming aside, my mother taught me to sew using techniques like organdy sandwiched into collars and cuffs, silk organza sleeve heads, and other methods for making things look good and hold up. I do a lap of the new Mega Store, unrewarded. So I go to the counter and ask. The clerk looks at me and says "I don't even know what that is!"
Here's a clue, honey: If your silly managers wouldn't devote large portions of floor space to fleece, decorative crap, and other "craft" items, they might be able to carry basic sewing staples. Except that nobody sews anymore. They "craft." Which means knocking out that project from the latest Martha Stewart magazine enticingly called "no sew." Or putting two pieces of fleece together, fringing the edges, and tying them together to "make" a blanket. I'm sorry, you MADE nothing. The "blanket" existed without your intervention. Ridiculousness. Especially when you carry Daisy Kingdom dress patterns that call for organdy or organza for the sleeve heads.
So, off I go to Fields. They DO have organdy. Score. (Wish I'd known the Standale store had a bolt in the clearance section, though.) So I ask for zinc oxide tape as suggested in the Tudor Tailor for taping the ends of boning together for poofy sleeves. No dice. But I didn't really expect it. Nor, however, did I expect the clerk to launch into a story about a woman who came in looking for "busket" for a corset, because it had loops and pins. Uh - a busk? *sigh*
This morning began at Lowe's in search of unglazed tiles to further even out the heat in my oven when baking bread. Nope. WHY would you want those? Or better yet "What are they for?" I now answer this question with one of my own: "What are they made for, or what an _I_ going to use it for?"
Then on to G.B. Russos. Wonderful store. They have lots of gourmet cooking supplies. So, since I would like a local source of King Arthur French Style Flour, I stop in and ask the manager. "I've never been asked for that before." Well, at least he was interested, wanted to know what it was for and how it was different from what he carried. And, after making some suggestions for other possible sources, said that IF I don't find it his supplier carries King Arthur, and would be willing to order me a case. Hmmm... I wonder how many bags in a case? Or if they would be able to order me the big professional bag instead.
So, in the AM I get to speed clean my main floor in preparation for the scribal workshop I'm holding. Hopefully I'll see a few folks. Then it will be back to sewing madly for The Wedding (TM).

Date: 2007-01-14 03:23 pm (UTC)I'll try to dig out the appropriate pattern. I'm a little bit annoyed that all the ones I've seen so far are yoked. Though I can show you how to work around that without too much trouble. Bring the Sew Beautiful and we'll have a consult.
