I love, love, love the painting with the polka dot cuffs. Those are seriously awesome. I am very intrigued by these dutch costumes.

I'm trying to work out how you get it to stay up with such a wide open neck with the shoulders sitting so far out.

Also trying to figure out what sort of structure to use. Corded kirtle underneath? Or bodies and a sort of farthingale-like petticoat? And skirt and bodice for the over layer? Or all once piece but different fabrics?

*g* I'll probably start with [livejournal.com profile] ablackram's Florentine bodice pattern, since it's the same shape. The try to work out the sleeves and skirt.

Do you have more references to polka dots being used in garments. I think that really intrigues me.

It is the right time frame for bodies and farthingales. I cannot see enough of the dress to know for sure, and I haven't really studied this style of clothing too indepth like.

I like the pleated/corded shirt sleeves. Those are really neat.

The more I look at this dress, the more I love it.

I've seen enough other pictures to be pretty sure this is a definite cone-shaped skirt with near zero gathering/pleating at the waist, at least in front.

I'll keep my eyes peeled for more polka dots. I suspect this might be the very pointy starter end of dotted swiss voile edging, so to speak.

It's a pretty keen dress. I like that the headscarf is the part of the ensemble that's whiteworked, too. The only example of this that I know of. Every other one has a whiteworked coif with a sheer scarf over top.

Question for you. Do you know if the shirt is piped or would they have created horizontal pleats and stitched them down?

This shirt has a really neat texture. I 'may' actually need to sew this dress.

I don't know for certain sure, but I've seen larger versions of the picture that LOOK more like a corded tuck than a sharp pleat. It might have been a pleat if it's a heavy silk satin. If I do it in taffeta, it's going to have to be corded. (Got a cording foot around here, somewhere.)

Thinking about saving my nickels and doing the bodice in this:

Looking at one of your other articles: http://www.insaneaboutgarb.com/friesianfrockgirl/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=2&Itemid=8

I had a copy of the picture on the bottom, can't remember where it came from but out of the set, I'd so love to find a good copy of that image... the whole dairy imagery, priceless!

I think that's one of the Buytenwyk etchings, but I'll have to go check. Looks like the Edammer maecht, but again gotta double check.

I think I know how to do that standup collar. Will take ironing and some tailoring know how. I saw it like last year in Threads. It's still a taught technique. And I never said you wuz worthless. Just can't see all the background n stuff on the mobile.

Never claimed you did! Goof.

T'would be cool to look at the article.

The real tailoring project would be that other Cranach, I think.
