The electronic silence continues to be mostly deafening. Well, most local people are at or are soon leaving for Border War. We're skipping out, as I don't trust Anneliese to be anything other than a monster under current circumstances.

I DID get an entertaining reply from Master Talan on the whole Coronet/Crown issue. Interestingly, he pointed out that the MK once had sumptuary laws covering coronet sizes, whilst Meridies did not. Reverse of the current situation. He even recalled one gentleman that was surreptitiously dubbed "Radio Free Meridies" for the size of his coronet. An epithet that could probably be adjusted for the territorial baronial coronets of Cynnabar.

And he included this bit, which had be wiping my morning beverage off the screen:

Battlements rise from a count's coronet,
A duchess grows strawberry leaves in her hair;
Pretty conceits for a peer or peerette,
But a baron has balls -- and more than a pair!

Heh. *sporfle*

So far, response to the polite request for a rethinking of the current hosting system: *cue crickets*

Meantime, strategizing has begun. I've laid a few things out for John, we've done some extensive reading, and I'm leaving him to percolate till tomorrow. He's the Political Science major, after all. I suspect he'll have some thoughts and plans on the topic that will be useful. We'll discuss it at length in the car tomorrow. Though the very low grade talking campaign continues, unabated.

Gotta love Master Talan. He's a regular source of wisdom, wit, and scathing commentary. He also claims I bring out the "silly" in him. Hence, most of our E-conversations usually degenerate into pun-ery and pedantics at some point.

Talan Gwynek? (Just making sure there's not another Master Talan out there that I don't know :))

The Cynnabar Coronets are not the largest I've seen by far. Strangely, I think it was a court Baron that won the prize for gaudiest head jewelry.

Yes, that Master Talan. ;-) A fair proportion of my SCA-related evil streak and opinions of Anathema can be blamed on him.

Oh, I know it. Some of them are WAY over the top. I just found it amusing.

I'd also not known that Master Talan was a poet. He's sent me quite a few bits of verse that are highly entertaining. He needs to compile a book. Maybe two books. One of SCA-specific pieces and one of his general work.

If it makes you feel better, my request has fallen on deaf ears too. I did bring it up tho because I know many people wish there were another option.

However, based on my recent experience with the lack of finding a good home for RUM, I am betting that this option is considered better than no option.

On an unrelated note, kingdom law does state that the coronets are not supposed to look like those of a higher station, but people get pretty creative in following that letter of the law. If I look at your coronet and I can't tell what it's supposed to be, you probably need to scale it back a bit...

What drives me bats is that it apparently isn't even open for discussion. The throwing up of the hands and insisting that anybody who's unhappy will just have to deal with it - not cool. There must be a middle ground. And I'm annoyed that nobody will even go LOOK for it.

Which segues into other post about "I have my mind made up, don't confuse me with the facts."

And my assertion that those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it. We've all been here before....

I've come up with a solution, but I have a feeling nobody responsible for the current situation is going to like it. Which is unlikely to stop me.

As long as you tread carefully and build something cool, people will respond. It's one of those build it and they will come things.
