There is at least one portrait that I can see well enough to recreate the smocking pattern. I've ordered a book on Cranach from the library (The big, beautiful one that runs $300 on Amazon). I wouldn't be surprised if there are more in there.
So - would it be useful to create a page where I display the portrait - and the accompanying smocking stitch diagram, for those less used to "reading the stitches"?

I suppose I can use Inkscape if I must, but that sounds like a lot of work.
