I haven't tested crushability. ;-) The straw wreath is well nigh indestructable. The wicker WILL break if you put enough pressure on it. In fact, some of the vines on the grape vine wreath crimped and bent instead of flexing under pressure.
I'd say the straw is slightly heavier than wicker, as it's a tightly packed wreath.
I probably ought to try MAKING the bases, too. But part of my impetus here was something relatively quick and easy to make - hence using a purchased wreath as a base.
