a few things

1. Not everyone you see at an event is more knowledgeable than you are. Don't get overwhelmed thinking that everyone knows more or more correct ways of doing things. It's not always true.

2. Don't worry about learning everything at once. It takes a long time to get a handle on the terminology etc. And it means more when you finally realize that it's second nature :-)

3. Don't try to reinvent the wheel. Use what others have learned.

4. This game is unlike anything else. Your previous experience with sports, games etc are useful but can also be limiting. Keep an open mind.

5. Your initial interest may change. You will be exposed to so many different crafts, cultures, people that you may find any number of things to focus on that you would never image.

6. There are many misconceptions about the Middle Ages & people have many opinions. Again open mind & don't get easily offended.

Now hopefully if you use any of these, you can couch them in much nicer terms. I am not the most diplomatic person :-)
