Have you ever had an SCA persona name really different from what you've currently arrived at, or has it stayed pretty much the same? Nope. I went without for a while, until I settled on something I liked. I got into heraldry fairly early, so I managed not to saddle myself with something too silly that I became known by. No Pixie Raven Moondust in my closet.

2. What's the inspiration for your current persona name? "Femke" is Fries for "Little girl," and "de Roas" translates as both "the pink" or "the rose." It let me create canting arms (azure, on a maunch argent a rose proper), and alludes both to my rosy complexion and the fact that I answered to "Rose" for years after "Titanic." Apparently I bear a striking resemblance to Kate Winslet, especially in that role.

3. What's your area(s) of study/interest? - Stop giggling, Alaina. Ye Olde Butterfly Brain has trouble concentrating on any one thing. I like costuming, primarily 14th century, though later period German/Dutch can grab my attention. Embroidery, calligraphy, illumination, painting, baking, preserves, anything that wanders by might catch my attention. I'm currently working on a theory of period leavening agents, and a deck of German playing cards. An embroidered hood is in the planning stages. I've got a silk knotted hairnet started.... and an embroidered chemise. I'm one of very few people that does period smocking.

4. Any that you consider yourself specialized in? - I'm not sure I have the attention span. Obscure stuff that I've amassed a certain feel for includes smocking, playing cards, preserves.

5. Because I'm nosy and it's a current thing elsewhere - what's your embarrassing newbie blunder? - Eeee. Probably the awful blue-violet matte satin cotehardie that laced up the back and didn't fit with the much too short and why was I reading Norris Pelicon that wasn't. Ack.

6. There is no number six. - It went the to the same place as my attention, did it?

7. What's your alphabet soup, if you've got any? - Not so much. AoA, OW (Middle Kingdom AoA level Arts Award).

8. How much time per week or other stated time unit do you spend at your chosen SCA concentration(s)? - Taking a break from the sewing, post-wedding. But as I'm the Regional Signet, THAT tends to eat a few hours of the weeks preceding any Royal Court in the region. Wish I had more hours in the day. And once my motivation comes back I'll probably start taking small projects to work again.

9. Have you ever walked away from an SCA area of concentration? Why? - I tend to avoid all the local groups. We're not really geographically convenient to most of them anyway, and the LOCAL local bunch is odd. It suffered an implosion a few years ago, and I'm not convinced they've solved their internal problems. There seems to be a weird combination of insular avoidance of outside events with power-hoarding that I find disturbing. So mostly we play at the Kingdom level, sometimes at the Baronial.

10. Any words of wisdom from the experienced for the utterly inexperienced? Sit back and people-watch for a while. Those who first offer you "advice" are often themselves pretty ignorant and have found that the only people who don't know better are the REAL newbies. Take a few classes, and you'll usually be able to start to sort out the truly knowledgeable. They can help lead you to other useful, clever, and friendly folks. I recently had a delegation from a Shire as a whole tell me they couldn't enter the Laurel Prize exhibitions because they didn't know any Laurels. It took me about 2.3 seconds to fix THAT problem by introducing them to three laurels who said they would be MORE than delighted to sponsor.

Also, learn not just the "how's" but the "why's" of whatever people are doing. Especially local customs. It may seem silly, but it has a reason. The online award nomination system OUGHT to come with a tutorial on what happens once you submit your recommendation. And all the pointy hats can get confusing without a guidebook. Don't worry about it too much, but DO do your homework and start trying to learn the local ways. It'll help you fit in that much faster.

Promise not to snigger much. Have to get back to scrubbing baseboards. Never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever will I CHOOSE white base fricking boards and trim. What were these people thinking?

But in the meantime I'll steal this and wander off.
