In searching for more images for a nice lady on the sca-garb list, I found some more goodies for ME. And after all, it IS all about me, isn't it?

Love the whitework and general delicacy of the chemise. BUT - I'm going to disagree with the little write-up. I think the majority of the visible sleeve is a white undergown - not the chemise. Those adorable polka-dot cuffs may or may NOT be attached to the chemise.

Interesting portrait, especially since it looks like it is OF Catarina van Hemessen - first time I've ever seen her in something so "Spanish":

And another van Hemessen - similar to her self-portrait, but this time seated at some sort of keyboard instrument. Familiar dress, though:

I think I want to put that black and white number on my List. *g*

naw, those are fancy sleeves with a gathered chemise cuff. Interesting pleats on the oversleeve cuff.

Bored eh?

I agree, and I think they're most likely attached to the chemise.

Now, I'm betting that the yoke underneath that partlet is done in fine whitework, not unlike this one:

What I do wonder is - is this the yoke of the chemise? Is it all made of this fine, sheer fabric? Or is it a sheer yoke and somewhat more substantial and plain for the remainder of the garment? OR - is it a sheer partlet tucked into a wide-necked chemise?

Back to the original - does it look like it closes at the side seam where you see the white?

looking at the picture with this detail, I'd be inclined to say partlet but some other paintings would leave me inclined to say not so... but that side seam is really curious. If it does fasten there it would hark back to earlier clothing where side seams were not uncommon yet known in these parts (and in Spain as well) and by trying to gather any detail from the image, the front does look solid all the way to that part....
