Today could have gone better....
May. 14th, 2010 10:54 pmWe had a Demon Pussy (words of a co-worker) that laid open my boss/technician's face this morning. A few stitches later, all is mostly well. But the owners (whose daughter works in the kennel) don't seem to get that I'm not willing to risk life and limb for this cat. If he's that vicious, he ain't that sick. Though another former co-worker suggested Holy Water. In a bucket. With a lid.
Then there was the four miles of backed up traffic on the way home. Lengthening an hour commute into an hour and a half.
Rori was drop-down tired when I got home, so I fed her, gave her a bottle, put her to bed.... and - she's still up. O_o
And I'm either sick or developing allergies in my old age. Could be either. It's mostly sinus pressure - especially laying down. But another co-worker who now has laryngitis says (kind of) that she started with the same thing. So I took a hydroxyzine capsule, and I'll be going to bed soon. Before I loose the ability to hit ANY keys - let alone the right ones. (Mostly "backspace" already).
Hopefully by the morning everybody will be up to the first trip to the Farmer's Market of the season.
Trying to decide if I should get a beginning or intermediate text book in Dutch. My recognition is decent, but my grammar is terrible. So, possibly I should start with the basic reference, yes?
Frisian texts are much more difficult to find. I may eventually end up trying to buy Frisian texts in Dutch, one my Dutch improves, as Frisian/English tomes are uncommon. It might also be worth trying to shake a few documents out of one of the research institutions. Problem being: Right around 1550 the use of Fryske as a legal and bureaucratic language stopped abruptly. Which means it became essentially a spoken language. So, 16th century research will require a command of Dutch, and Old Frisian. BUT, it's pretty much only possible with the current materials to come at Old Frisian via West Frisian through Middle Frisian. More or less. Unless somebody knows which of the current dialects is closest to Old Frisian and there happen to be texts written on that dialect. Doubtful. THEN we can also talk about the Eastern dialects, which are entirely different.
