So, I have now e-mailed the Museum we suspect to be holding the paintings of the Dutch ladies. Wow. That makes them sort of sound like kidnappers, doesn't it? *g* Don't tell no me. I included a few of the inventory numbers, in the hopes of getting a useful response. I asked if the paintings in question had ever been pictured in a catalog, and if images are available for purchase.

While I'm at it, does anybody know anything about this book?:

Bayerisches Nationalmusem. Fächer: Kunst und Mode auf fünf Jahrhunderten. München: Hirmer, 1987

Or this one:

Bruegel to Rembrandt: Dutch and Flemish Drawings from the Maida and George Abrams Collection - This is a catalog of the exhibition. Looks like it might be intriguing.

I've been browsing images yet again. I'm firming up my pre-1530 information for my class. And happened across all sorts of fun.

First, for Willemyne, more kolf:

I think it dates to around 1616. You might have seen it, but I thought I'd send it along, in case!

Now, for whoever it was who was interested in 16th century French stuff, I thought this was gorgeous. It's color, unlike the earlier version at the Met, which is only on the web in B&W:

This is almost enough to make me take up 16th century French myself. And I invite all those who are exposed to garb snarks to print it out and carry it with you. Please, please the next time someone says "Pink isn't period".... stuff this up their nose.

First, one of those mysterious proto-Flemish gowns with the short sleeves that engendered the dust-up on whether they existed or were only present in allegorical picutres. This is on the Donatrix, so I'm thinkin' it existed...

I think this is the first time I've seen this dress with WHITE trim, and white foldback sleeve linings:

I also note that she is holding one of the honkin' coral paternosters.

A striped hem on the donatrix, and striped sleeves on the lady in back??

OK, so the hat is probably a bit fanstastical. But that looks like a darned pattern on the chemise, does it not?

Now, is this an odd, low cut partlet with white piping?

Off to ponder.....
