Flights of Fancy

I promise, back to costuming stuff next week. I'll update on the new chemise, and maybe attempt the drop-front kirtle. And maunder more about petticoats and the bodice/jacket.
Fiberfest was much fun. Even if I was on a yarn diet this year. The haul:
One skein of Fleece Artist's Suriblue in Wildflower to knit Laminaria for Mom. I passed on the thrummed mitten kit, which I sort of regret. But maybe I'll make up my own.
One Blue Moon Funky Sock Monkey kit.
2 skeins of Socks That Rock mill end yarn in a champagne color for baby. I'm thinking of tring The Secret Garden sweater from my Alice Starmore book. I think this finer yarn and smaller needles will let me scale it down from a Sz 2-3 to maybe 9 or 12 months.
A baby hats and booties book.
The realtorture fantasy came in my e-mail. I've been sporadically remembering to save the reward codes from Disney movies. I now lament all those that got thrown out here and at the folks' place:
Shoot me now.
I know. Astronomical points. But might have been doable. I'll keep saving them now, and movie stubs as well. Might get lucky or something.
John is also talking to the HR dept of the Co. he's trying to get a job with. So here's hoping.

I envy those with the patience and skill to knit!

What worked for you, and what would you change if you were to do it again?
Did you line it? What sort of lacing did you use and how did you set the rings?
Heck, we could teach you to knit, I'm sure. I think it's a persistence thing. I couldn't get much out of it the first two times I tried to learn. Now I can handle about anything. Though I have no desire to try my hand at knitted trunkhosen!

Date: 2008-08-19 09:29 pm (UTC)When I did cut it out, I cut the bib section from top to floor and though I tend to habitually add width to the bottom of my skirts through cut, I did not this time and was satisfied with the results as it was still pleated in the back and that gave plenty of width... and also helps add poof to the rear. Oddly, I found the gown supported my bust enough though certainly not the idea shape in modern terms and a better fitted partlet would have helped... it was made just an inch too big which seemed to matter.
Now, since it was initially a test run of the gown, I did not top stitch the seams for strength since I might have had to take something in or move a few seams or whatever... it was fine so will do this soon but it also means that I just quickly sewn on the lacing rings, though apart from the starting ones, they were slightly offset but seemed to sit fine. Oh, and yes... did I mention... the gown was lined with linen, the gown itself was a fine, light weight, wool and very comfortable to wear in the summer.
...I always cut it so the body opening is a bit too narrow for my liking, shall make adjustments and then try it again. Ended up using a simple cut (similar to reconstructing history blog), rather than the more complicated I normally used and it worked just fine though it felt different as if it were pulling than enrobing, but for a more supportive style of gown, it seems more correct... if it is to be supportive, which for me, would not hurt.
